Ground Temperature Sensors

Great News ….. The ground temperature sensors are operating and looking good.

I am excited to see how they perform this winter and how consistent the ground temperatures are

As expected, I see the temperatures of the firs four feet fluxuating quite a bit. The sensors below four feet are fairly stable.

The only concern I have is that I may have made a mistake in construction and did not provide any earth or insulation inside the 1/2 inch CPVC piping down to the sensors. This will propbably be the next generation of sensors or a modification to be made in the spring of 2008. A little late in the season to change things now.

Stay tuned ……

I, too, will be interested to see how much you continue to pickup from the bottom of your trench. Too bad all of that heat is not making it back into the house. It looks like about 10 deg short of total saturation. I wonder if the flow rate of the fluid would have any affect.

It looks like your house must be staying quite comfortable. Are your power usage rates about like those in the summer?

Thanks!

Thanks for the feedback Ron, Power usage during the winter is higher. It really depends on how cold it gets. When it gets cold enough that the Electric Resistance Backup heat kicks in, the power consumption is a bit higher. Electric Resistance Backup Heat is powered by a 10Kw heat coil in the Air Handler. I am rather surprised myself that the temperatures of the incoming ground fluid are so low compared to the ground sensors at the 11 foot level. It could be a result of the placement of the sensors. Keep in mind that the sensors are placed on the outside of the pipe. They are not true readings of the fluid or water temperature.
